This week marks the opening of the voting process for the World Athletes of the Year ahead of the World Athletics Awards 2024.
The system for selecting the award winners has changed for 2024. Like last year, there will be three separate awards for men and three for women, recognising the athletes of the year for track, field and out-of-stadium events. There will also be men’s and women’s awards for an overall World Athlete of the Year.
The nominees for Women’s Field Athlete of the Year and Men’s Field Athlete of the Year have been announced today (14).
How it works
A panel of international experts has compiled a long list of nominees for each of the three main award categories. Voting will take place to determine the two finalists in each category.
The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and social media votes will each count for 25% of the result.
The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email, while the social vote will be open on Facebook, Instagram and X. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted later today; a 'like' on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on X will count as one vote.
Once the finalists have been established, a fan vote will open – for all registered users of Inside Track – to help determine the overall World Athletes of the Year.
The 2024 World Athletics Awards also includes the Rising Star awards, Coaching Achievement Award, Woman of the Year, Photograph of the Year, Member Federation Award and President’s Award.
