The Hollywoodbets Durban 10km returns for its 4th edition, and this year it makes its debut in Johannesburg, aiming to expand across the country and spread the vibrant Purple Team Spirit. As the race aspires to become a series.
In 2023, the event evolved into The Hollywoodbets Durban 10km, with the prize purse increasing to R342,500 and the number of race entries growing to 5,000. The introduction of the 5km race attracted significant interest from the running community. Cian Oldknow of the Purple Team won the women’s race showcasing her prowess etching out top talent and breaking the ribbon. While Kabelo Mulaudzi took top honours in the men’s field. Both athletes are looking to return to Durban to defend their titles in what promises to be a very competitive race.
This year, the prize purse has surged to an impressive R357,500. The first male and female finishers will each earn R37,500, with second and third place receiving R30,000 and R27,500 respectively.
The event is set to witness a vibrant migration of purple, with entries doubling to accommodate 10,000 participants in Durban and 7,500 in Johannesburg. The race has grown substantially since its inception, as it enters its fourth edition, the focus remains on expansion and creating a sporting event enjoyed by the masses and financially rewarding for athletes.
“We are pleased to be entering the 4th edition of the race, it has gained a lot of support from runners, with 1,000 entries sold in the first week. This is a great start as we aim for 10,000 runners,” said Hollywood Athletics Club President Morgan Shandu.
The race has ambitious goals to grow and attract talent from across the country. This year is no exception, with competitors such as Kabelo Mulaudzi, Stephen Mokoka, Elory Gelant, Matthews Leeto, Thabang Mosiako, and many others expected to compete for top honours in the men’s field. In the ladies’ field, we can expect Cian Oldknow, Neheng Khatala, Tayla Kavangah, Cacisile Sosibo, and Irvette van Zyl among others to be in Durban on the Sunday, 29 September 2024, as the race is scheduled to start at 7am.
