The Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km makes its debut on Saturday, 16 November 2024, in the streets of Johannesburg. Following the success of the 4th edition of the race held in Durban recently, Gauteng runners can expect the same purple spirit, as race organizers prepare to host 7,500 participants. This comes after hosting over 8,000 runners for the first time since the race’s inception.
The race continues to boast an impressive prize purse of R357,500. The first male and female finishers will each take home R37,500, with R30,000 awarded to second place and R27,500 to third. With such an attractive prize purse, the race is expected to draw top athletes, as seen with the national and international interest at the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km. At the Durban event, Lesotho nationals who dominated the race included Olympian Tebello Ramakongana from the Xcel Running Club, who won the men's race, crossing the finish line in 28:07. He was closely followed by fellow Olympian Elroy Gelant.
In the women’s race, Neheng Khatala of the Hollywood Athletics Club claimed victory with a time of 32:25, closely followed by a strong field of runners, including Cacisile Sosibo, Blandina Makatisi, and Cian Oldknow. With such an exciting race in Durban, the question remains: Will the same athletes win? Event organisers are excited to announce that Ramakongana has already confirmed his entry for the Joburg leg of the race, alongside Stephen Mokoka and Mathews Leeto from Hollywood Athletics Club.
Morgan Shandu, President of Hollywood Athletics Club, expressed his excitement about the event's debut in Johannesburg: “From the humble beginnings of the club to our first race, we always knew we wanted to create an event that caters to everyone—one that Durban could be proud of. Now, as it makes its first appearance in Joburg, we hope to bring the same excitement and purple spirit to the people of Johannesburg.”
Race organizers have promised much excitement, including post-race entertainment and a family day filled with fun. The race caters to all types of runners, with the main event starting outside Wanderers Cricket Stadium on Corlett Drive and finishing at James and Ethel Grey Park. The 10km race is set to begin at 06:00, with a fun run/walk 5km starting at 07:00.
Race entries are now open and available online at Webtickets or at a Pick n Pay store near you. Lace up and join the purple family for a day of fun and excitement!
