Fresh off a silver medal at the ASA Cross Country Championships, Cacisile Sosibo is now focused on adding another podium finish to her accomplishments, aiming for success at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K on National Heritage Day, Tuesday, 24 September 2024.

Sosibo claimed the runner-up position behind Cian Oldknow in the senior women’s 10km race at the Vaal University of Technology on Saturday 7 September, a result which was the perfect tune-up for the final race of the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series.

“I’m pleased. This year I attained a podium at both the track and field championships and cross-country championships. I have recovered and I feel good,” said the Central Gauteng Athletics athlete who also earned a silver medal over 10 000m at the ASA Senior Track and Field Championships in April.

It’s been a busy last five weeks for the Boxer Athletics Club top runner. During August, the 27-year-old ran no less than four races, grabbing two podium finishes. Sosibo says she follows a strict regime to ensure that she can recover quickly between back-to-back races.

“The key to quick recovery is what you do,” says Sosibo. “In my case I go for two massages per week, drink lots of water and recovery drinks and get at least ten hours of sleep per day in order to be at my best.”

Thanks to that sound recovery protocol as well as the confidence that she’ll take from a third-place finish at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Johannesburg on 17 August, Sosibo and her coach Michael ‘Sponge’ Seme believe that she stands a good chance of claiming her first ever Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series podium finish on the demanding Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K route.

“You have to consider the strengths of your opponents. For example, Kenyans and Ethiopians are usually strong on flat courses, but they tend to struggle on hills. So, I’m looking forward to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K because the hills are tough. I’m hopeful that I will run well.”

But to end up on the podium, Sosibo will have to get the better of a quality field including Lesotho’s 10km national record holder Neheng Khatala who has confirmed her participation in the sold-out event on 24 September.

"We’re incredibly proud to have athletes of Cacisile Sosibo and Neheng Khatala’s calibre competing at the final event of the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in Joburg," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Both runners have been fantastic supporters of the series, and it's a privilege to witness their dedication and talent firsthand. Their participation elevates the race, and we’re thankful to have them on the start line as we celebrate the conclusion of a remarkable season on National Heritage Day."
