The Kenyan world-record holder has won the Berlin Marathon for a record fifth time, crossing the line in 2:02min 42sec in the German Capital City of Berlin on Sunday.

Eliude Kipchoge finished 31 seconds ahead of his countryman Vincent Kipkemoi who had a splendid marathon as well, Kipkemoi is believed to be a good substitute of Kipchoge in the few years to come should Eliude decide to hang his running shoes. The Ethiopian athlete, Tadese Takele came third with 42 seconds off the pace.

The Kenyan's fifth win takes him past Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie's four victories but he (Eliude Kipchoge) finished outside his previous world record he set last year in Berlin, of 2:01:09.

Eliude finished many doubts after a surprise sixth-place at the Boston Marathon in April, the 38th year old Kenyan king of the road Eliude Kipchoge came into the race confident about victory, he told media contingent that he felt he was "coming home" at a race he has won four times and set the world record twice.

He and Ethiopian Derseh Kindie pulled away from the pack very early, these two athletes crossed the halfway mark with a split of 60:21, which was slower than that of the Kenyan's Eliude Kipchoge himself in 2022 world-record time of 59:51.

Eliude Kipchoge continued to maintain his pace and finally crossed the line well clear ahead of other athletes for a record fifth win.

In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Berlin mayor Kai Wegner started the race by pressing a red buzzer.
