Johannesburg - Irvette van Zyl and Nkosikhona Mhlakwana emerged victorious at the 2023 Hollywood Athletics Club Gauteng awards held at Johannesburg Country Club yesterday the 20th of January 2024.
Irvette van Zyl, the reigning Soweto Marathon Champion and the Olympic 2024 hopeful for South Africa told Gijima Athletics News that she is feeling good to start 2024 on a high note with a national award after she started low last year as a result of injury that saw her missing the competitive running for long time.
The 36-year Hollywood Athletics Club elite runner, who represented South Africa in the marathon in the World Athletics Championship in August 2023 and finished 45th overall, says the Olympics are important to her and she want to make South Africa proud by displaying her A game.
After a slow start last year, Irvette came back stronger in the second half of the 2023 running calendar, winning the Soweto Marathon 2023 with a new record time.
On the other hand, Mhlakwana at his absentia was nominated as the national male athlete of the year for the year 2023. He came position 12 at the last year's (2023) Comrades marathon with a time of 05:30:35, being the 1st male in the Hollywood Athletics Club's colours to cross the finish line.
